20th July 2012[frame_left][/frame_left]The Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), part of the Waterford institute of Technology, based at the Carriganore Campus, recently upgraded its fibre links to enable better connection and service, ensuring WIT/TSSG continues providing the best service possible to staff and project partners.
TSSG moved to the WIT Carriganore Campus in 2005, and the original link, a fibre ‘spur’, ran from the WIT Main Campus on the Cork Road, via the IDA Technology Park to the ArcLabs building in Carriganore. After seven years, the WIT Carriganore Campus now has a resilient fibre loop connecting it directly to the Main Campus on the Cork Road. Since July this year, a secondary spur was brought to the new TSSG R2 building via the Old Kilmeaden road, and diverse paths from the new R2 building to ArcLabs finalised the loop in a fibre “ring”.
HEAnet, Ireland’s National Education and Research Network provider, have also upgraded the original 1Gbps Ethernet connection to ArcLabs, from 1Gbps to a 2Gbps connection (1Gbps for each side of the loop).
Both sides of the loop can be used during normal operation, providing 2Gbps of inter-campus connectivity. In the event of a fibre failure, or during scheduled maintenance, the link degrades seamlessly to 1Gbps, ensuring operations continue effectively.
As part of this fibre upgrade HEAnet also delivered a fully resilient 10Gbps Ethernet connection to the TSSG Data Centre providing additional independent bandwidth capacity.
These recent upgrades ensures that TSSG and Waterford Institute of Technology continue to be one of the best connected HEIs in Ireland, and demonstrates the Institutes dedication to providing the best IT resources possible.
