The Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) EU Liaison Manager, James Clarke, attended and took part in the Ireland – Brazil Trade Mission in Sao Paulo and Brasília, Brazil from the 8th to 11th October 2012.
The Irish delegation were involved in a number of individual events organised by Enterprise Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) including the SFI Showcase event entitled “Ireland and Brazil: Celebrating the Success of Partnership and Forging Relationships for a New Generation of Scientists and Engineers.” During this event, James Clarke made a presentation entitled ‘Potential collaboration topics’ which included examples within the areas related to autonomic networks in the Future Internet and building international cooperation for Trustworthy ICT.
The Trade Mission included a launch of the Science Without Borders programme between Brazil and Ireland. The launch ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Education (MEC) in Brasilia, was officiated by President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of Ireland, Joe Costello. During the ceremony, a number of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings were launched including the MoU between Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Universidade de Brasília-UnB. Representitives from Waterford Institute of Technology included Don O’ Neill, International Strategic Projects Office who coordinated the signing of the MoU between WIT and UnB.
James Clarke is the project coordinator of the Framework programme 7 BIC project, which is engaged with bringing together the research communities and funding bodies of the EU and Brazil together, specifically in the areas related to trustworthy ICT. The BIC project is funded within the portfolio of the European Commissions DG-CONNECT Unit H.4: Trust and Security research.
