Four St. Kierans College transition year students, Eoin Walsh, Tom O’Keefe, Wade Porteus and Sean Comerford went on work placement in TSSG during January. They spent two weeks in the newly opened TSSG Kilkenny offices, which is conveniently located on the St. Kieran’s campus.
The students investigated a number of topics from basic installation of Linux on a desktop machine, linux shell comands and interfacing with a Raspberry PI device. The main task the students undertook was building a distributed Instant Messaging service. They used RabbitMQ as a message broker and coded up command line IM clients in three different languages, Java, PHP and Erlang. The IM clients created bi-directional message queues with the RabbitMQ server which facilitated instant messaging between the different machines.
This experience gave the students an insight into operating system installation, interfacing remotely with an embedded device, software development in a number of different languages and testing of the features they developed. They were tutored over the period by TSSG staff, Chris Foley, Joe Tynan and Dr. Ray Carroll.
