Kevin McGrath from the EFM group attended the inaugural ‘Kick Starting’ Automated Testing conference held in Belfast recently. The event was hosted by SOFTTEST Ireland – The Irish Software Testing Special Interest Group. The 1 day event consisted of a series of speakers and demonstrations of test tools.

Paul Gerrard talked about how to identify features of a product and how scenarios can be derived using the Gherkin language. He also described the DeFOSPAM method which involves taking a requirement and identifying the feature it describes.

Tom Roden from SQS gave a presentation entitled ‘Building a lean mean, BDD test automation machine. The experience of working with a client in the financial space that dealt in FX, Bond, Equities was used as an example. Using FitNesse they captured test cases. From this they built a Framework called ‘Safia’ which is an executable documentation system.

Dorothy Graham presented ‘Intelligent mistakes in Test Automation’ (or it seemed like a good idea at the time). The Effectiveness and Efficiency of both Manual and Automated testing must be considered.

Finally Graham Abell who is the Test Lead at Paddy Power gave a very detailed presentation on how Paddy Power has automated most of their iOS apps using the ios-driver tool. This allows automation on iOS devices using Selenium Wire Protocol. The presentation included a number of videos to show the automation testing in progress.

Kevin also attended a demo of Microsoft’s ALM tool suite.
