eircom Business for Waterford Institute of TechnologyWaterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunication Software and Systems Group (TSSG) and eircom Business were named IT Team of the Year at last night’s Tech Excellence Awards at the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin. The Award, sponsored by Arkphire, recognised the outstanding management of technology and overall excellence of the TSSG with eircom Business team.

eircom Business worked with TSSG to enhance its communications capability (both internally and externally to collaborating partners) by building a scalable Unified Communications environment encompassing IP Voice, Video and Collaboration tools. It supported the work of TSSG at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) West Campus by facilitating the development of a new communications and cloud networking test-bed for TSSG, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for ICT research and innovation. Furthermore, the project required the upgrade of the current wired and wireless network infrastructure within TSSG due to the current infrastructure being end of life; a future-proof solution across the campus was required.

The multi strand project has delivered a significantly improved communications infrastructure for TSSG that has allowed for its backbone to operate at 10GB. In addition, they developed an innovative research tool in response to a significant technical challenge (the flexible, multiprotocol radio network able to emulate technologies ranging from WiMAX to LTE) for TSSG, one of the world’s foremost ICT research organisations.

In addition, TSSG and eircom Business have deployed a Cisco telepresence solution that is now delivering rich video communication. The voice, video suite is supplemented by the deployment of Cisco Webex for voice and web-based conferencing, and for content sharing and social media integration. The Cisco networking infrastructure enables WIT not only to stabilise its internal environment, but also help future proof the network with increased capacity allowing students to connect via numerous devices easily and accessibly, accessing online applications such as Microsoft 365/Gmail/Moodle and Lync.

Lorraine Butler, Director of Enterprise, Government, eircom Business commented, “We are delighted to have our work with TSSG recognised with the IT Team of the Year Award. We have a strong relationship with TSSG and relished the opportunity to work on a project that would allow us to think outside the box and provide forward thinking solutions that underpin our commitment and capability as a leading provider. We collaborated to deliver a solution that allows TSSG’s current infrastructure to thrive, future-proofs it and pushes the boundaries, supplying the software development radios & network which will make WIT a leading entity in the research & development area for years to come.”

Professor Willie Donnelly, Director of TSSG commented ” “The TSSG Cloud Networking testbed will help partners to build, test, and deploy state of the art cloud based services thus delivering major market advantage. The TSSG Cloud Networking testbed is part of a Pan-European network infrastructure. It has the capacity to provide Irish companies and academia access to remotely evaluate and prototype their services across Europe””

The Tech Excellence Awards, now in its 14th year, recognise excellence in the implementation of tech solutions and also the business of marketing and implementing technology for business. Master of Ceremonies, Matt Cooper, presented awards across 20 categories
