Grants supports, angel investment and innovation options for startups and early stage businesses will be the focus of a specialist event taking place during the Startup Gathering in early October.
As part of the Startup Gathering, South East Business & Innovation Centre (South East BIC) and Waterford Institute of Technology’s (WIT) Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) are co-hosting the seminar ‘Driving Business Forward: Funding & Innovation Supports for Start-ups and SMEs’ on Tuesday, October 6th, at the Tower Hotel, Waterford from 2pm to 5.30 pm. The event will help individuals and small business drive their business forward by hearing how to access the funds and innovative ideas that are needed to set up or expand business.
South East BIC & TSSG want to help demystify the process and raise awareness of the various funding sources currently available. The seminar brings funders and innovators for businesses under one roof to explain the funding and innovative opportunities available and how to access them. Innovation options that businesses can avail of include mobile platforms & services, security privacy & identity, data analytics & social computing.

Speakers will represent organisations such as Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Ireland, InterTrade Ireland, Halo Business Angel Network (HBAN), the Credit Review Office, Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland, MicroFinance Ireland
Participating organisations will have information stands at the event so attendees can discuss their ideas and make valuable contacts within the support network. A Start Up Village will feature start up’s based in Waterford along with recent start ups from the New Frontiers programme in Waterford.
Two clients of South East BIC and TSSG will then outline their innovations and the supports they have received to date. They are Dave Whelan, CEO and Founder, of Waterford based startup Immersive VR Education and CFO, Kevin Mullarkey, of e-Drive, Waterford.
The keynote speaker is Barry Downes, CEO of TSSG and founder of FeedHenry, a spin out company of TSSG that was acquired by the major multinational Red Hat Inc, for €63.5m in September 2014 making it the first ICT multinational of its kind to move into the region and one of the largest spin out acquisitions in higher education.
“Over the past three years, TSSG has delivered innovative solutions to over 110 Irish companies through Enterprise Ireland programmes such as Innovation Partners. This event will give startups an insight into the learnings we have in TSSG from our start-up and spin-out programmes and I personally have from developing a research project into a spin-out Company worth over €63m”, said Mr Barry Downes, CEO of TSSG.
