The SFI VistaMilk Centre represents a unique collaboration between Agri-Food and information communications technology (ICT) research institutes and leading Irish/multinational food and ICT companies. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM).

The centre under the directorship of Donagh Berry, is hosted by Teagasc, in partnership with the Tyndall National Institute, Ireland’s national microelectronics institute, the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology, and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics.

Job Overview:

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position funded by the Science Foundation Ireland VistaMilk “Dairy by Design” Research Centre, in the project entitled “Development and manufacture of a carotenoid-enriched dairy product”. VistaMilk is a multi-disciplinary Research Centre that focuses on AgriTech, bringing together the disciplines of ICT and Agriculture. The research centre consists of TSSG-Waterford Institute of Technology, Tyndall National Institute, INSIGHT research centre for data analytics and Teagasc. The candidate is expected to be highly self-motivated, and willing to work in future emerging topics in AgriTech.

The Research Assistant will run a human clinical trial to test the efficacy of the developed enriched dairy product. The tasks related to this position include supporting the PI and the research team with the development of the testing protocol for the human clinical trial. This will involve a detailed level of administration relating to ethical application, case report form development, database preparation, and project management for the human clinical trial. The Research Assistant will be required to schedule the study visits and perform a battery of testing relating to nutritional assessment, management of blood samples, phlebotomy, cognitive and vision testing, data capture, data preparation, data analysis and data reporting.

The Salary for this position is: €29,650 p.a.

Academic Qualifications PhD in Science
Professional Qualifications At least 5 years of experience in the setting up, development and data analysis of human clinical trials
Experience At least 5 years experience running clinical trials in the field of nutrition and vision for human function
Specific Knowledge and skills
  • Assessing visual function and cognitive function, measurement of macular pigment.
  • Phlebotomy
  • Experience obtaining the necessary ethical approval previous to perform a clinical trial
Experience in setting up study visits with human subjects and following up of relationship with them along the clinical trial
LT. Skills
  • Have excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Excellent knowledge of SPSS
Specific Personal Qualities
  • Ability to work independently, self-directed but also work well within a team and under supervision and direction.
  • Have clinical research experience  with ability to work within scope of practice in a confident and safe manner, ensuring professional accountability and adherence to  policies and protocol.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills – with attention to detail and good record keeping skills.
  • Have excellent organisational and ‘problem solving’ skills.
Ability to find new funding opportunities

Responsibilities/Duties

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain ethical approval for the human clinical trial;
  • Perform vision tests, including the analysis of the carotenoid content of the macula lutea in human subjects in the clinical trial;
  • Draw blood samples from the subjects and store for biochemical analysis;
  • Data analysis of outcome from clinical assessment.
