Candidate Profile

Candidates should have a PhD (or be near completion of their PhD studies) in one of the following fields: communications networks, multi-media communications, signal processing, computer science or mathematics.  They should have a strong publication record with the ability to work across traditional disciplines, to work in collaboration with industry partners and to initiate new research collaborations. 

TSSG also hosts Postdoctoral Research Fellows who have been successful in competitive funding schemes (such as SFI /IRC).

Postdoc researchers are encouraged to be proactive in developing new areas of research activity. This flexibility provides a number of benefits, many of which are typically not available in traditional University departments.  These benefits include:

  • The opportunity to collaborate with R&D labs of high profile ICT companies with bases in Ireland.
  • The opportunity to (officially) supervise and co-supervise MSc by Research and PhD students.  WIT regulations acknowledge that researchers actively involved in graduate student supervision should be formally recognised as supervisors, regardless of their faculty status.
  • The opportunity to harness TSSG’s state-of-the-art test-bed facilities to carry out research studies.  TSSG has its own data centre (managed by a dedicated infrastructure team), incorporating, inter alia, a IaaS compute cloud, a powerful Hadoop cluster, a range of SDN-enabled network switches, a dedicated pan-Ireland SDN network, a unique software-defined radio infrastructure and a full suite of Cisco Unified Communications software.
  • The opportunity to develop research funding proposals and, if funded, be officially recognised as the project Principal Investigator.
  • The opportunity to develop research ideas into pre-commercial prototypes and to access support to create a start-up company.  Researchers have access to the experience of TSSG’s cohort of software engineering professionals and TSSG’s network of entrepreneurs.
  • Well defined salary scales and processes for promotion to Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow grades.  Candidates who are citizens of particular countries with which Ireland has bilateral tax agreements covering researchers can avail of very favourable tax incentives for a period of two years.
